The Black Treatment Advocates Network (BTAN) will host a public event on March 12 through 14 from 9:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event will be a 3-day training focused on building science literacy among communities in Los Angeles, specifically as it relates to women and girls.  We invite you to partner with us during the 3-day training aptly entitled Women AWARE: Advocating for Wellness, Awareness, Reduction, and Empowerment.  Our 3-day training event, on the heels of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, will speak to such topics as women and HIV, biomedical interventions for women, treatment myths and suspicions in Black communities, HIV and faith, and a number of other topics that speak specifically to women and Black communities.  The training will create a platform for all women, including PLWHA, youth, trans-women, and beyond.

The Women's Progress Commission will soon conduct hearings to promote interest in preserving areas that are relevant in American women's history. Some of the groups promoting this interest are state historical societies, women's organizations, and groups such as the Girl Scouts of the USA

KNOW YOUR HISTORY IN FEBRUARY
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

Black History Facts
  • Black History Month began as "Negro History Week," which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
  • On February 12, 2009, the NAACP marked its 100th anniversary. Spurred by growing racial violence in the early twentieth century, and particularly by race riots in Springfield Illinois in 1908, a group of African American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). February 12, 1909 was chosen because it was the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.
  • Jack Johnson became the first African-American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in 1908. He held on to the belt until 1915.
  • John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer in Ohio when he passed the Bar in 1854. When he was elected to the post of Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio in 1855 Langston became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. John Mercer Langston was also the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, famed poet of the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Thurgood Marshall was the first African American ever appointed to the United States Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and served on the Supreme Court from 1967 to 1991.
  • George Washington Carver developed 300 derivative products from peanuts among them cheese, milk, coffee, flour, ink, dyes, plastics, wood stains, soap, linoleum, medicinal oils and cosmetics.
  • Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American ever elected to the United States Senate. He represented the state of Mississippi from February 1870 to March 1871.
  • Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives. She was elected in 1968 and represented the state of New York. She broke ground again four years later in 1972 when she was the first major party African-American candidate and the first female candidate for president of the United States.
  • The black population of the United States in 1870 was 4.8 million; in 2007, the number of black residents of the United States, including those of more than one race, was 40.7 million.
  • In 1940, Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American performer to win an Academy Award (the film industry`s highest honor) for her portrayal of a loyal slave governess in Gone With the Wind.
  • In 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. During her 8-day mission she worked with U.S. and Japanese researchers, and was a co-investigator on a bone cell experiment.

Since there were so many things that took place in 2014 that caused the World to question what has more Value? a Human Life or a Tangible object. Men, women, and children are sold into a $150 billion annual market for sex and labor. This is happening globally, and domestically; in urban and suburban areas; in hotels, restaurants, and on street corners. Slavery is wrapped up in almost every industry's supply chain, tainting the food we eat, the clothes we buy, and the electronics we love. After the international drug trade, trafficking of humans is tied with arms dealing as the second- largest criminal industry in the world. Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.

Sex trafficking is often highlighted in the media but is not the primary form of modern-day slavery. Using coercion, violence and deception, labor traffickers force victims to work against their will in industries that range from small mom-and-pop shops to enormous mineral extraction camps for commodities such as gold. Some individuals enter into work agreements willingly but accrue enormous debt to the trafficker in the form of food, shelter, documentation, and travel fees. The traffickers inflate these costs and tack on enormous interest rates that condemn their new hires to a life of underpaid labor or slavery.

Traffickers can be strangers or acquaintances, family members or friends. The economic, physical and social vulnerability of most victims makes them easy prey for traffickers, who lure them in with promises for a chance at a better life

    AVAILABLE ON AMAZON

“No experience is a cause of success or failure. We do not suffer from the shock of our experiences, so-called trauma - but we make out of them just what suits our purpose”. Alfred Adler-...

For most rides, you must have your seatbelt safely fastened to avoid a potentially catastrophic injury. As you thumb through the pages of this riveting journey; you’ll instantly be glued to your seats with no secondary need for a safety device. The flood of emotions, intense connective entanglement and subtle dissonance evoked by each woman’s life story, can’t be contained.
Layers upon layers of fabric are woven together to create a masterpiece by which the stories of Sexual Abuse, Addiction, Secrecy, Manipulation, Heartache, Suicide, Psychological Torture and Rejection becomes the blueprint for Triumph.
10 Torn Layers of Silk is a collection of personal life stories narrated by 11 amazing women who were transformed by the clay of their experiences. The wounds that are unveiled in these stories are much deeper than the physical eye can comprehend. The bleeding from the wounds have subsided, however the scaring tissue underneath the coating of the skin remains.
This journey becomes more than a depiction of descriptive accounts of trauma related occurrences. It connects the average woman to a universal stage by which our indignant pain transcends cultural, socio-economic, political, professional, racial, and religious discriminatory biases. This universal platform is where the women in the book find their most sought after peace and freedom.
This book becomes a personal journal for the reader as they read, reflect and record their own parallel processes; drawing a spiritual connection to each narrated story. The therapeutic commentary included after each story will provide a comprehensive framework for threading the key messages from the journey itself. Tasha L. Stiger, MSW

    Belief in Yourself

Imagine yourself to be the type of person you want to be, and then be it. It won’t come instantly and you may backslide from time to time, but don’t let that deter you.

    Don’t give up!

Life is an ever-changing process, and nothing is final. Each moment and every new day is a chance to begin anew.

BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FOR MOM!

Getting yourself, your husband, and your kids all out the door once school is back in session can seem like mission impossible! Avoid mommy meltdowns !“It’s important to adopt healthy habits at the start of the school year because you’ll make your life as a mom so much easier and won’t have to be a drill sergeant!

    1) PACK UP BACK PACKS AT NIGHT!  Children should know it’s their responsibility to pack up the things they need for their school day. Help them schedule time before bed

    2) HAVE QUICK & HEALTHY BREAKFASTS:  Save the pancakes and French toast for weekend mornings. Alternatively,  prepare yogurt parfaits, fruit cups, boiled eggs or filled baggies of almonds and fruit the night before! Saves you the headache and a more healthy choice for on the go!

    3) PLAN A WEEK’S OF WARDROBE: In a lot of households, this takes the most time! Sunday night, make a date with your child and play “Fashion Coordinator” ..Layout wardrobe for each day ahead of time. Even place in closet according to the days! You won’t be sorry, I promise!
    4) USE YOUR PHONE CALENDAR:  Utilize your phone calendars and reminders to schedule school nights, basketball practice, hair appointments and dance recitals. Help you help you! :-)
    5) POWER DOWN DAILY: Kids are used to late summer nights, so ease them into bed time by closing out electronics a half hour before bedtime. Like reading or something calm to ease better into sleep.

    6) BE A TASKMASTER:  Create a chore chart and hang it on the fridge, daily chores with a check list. They will not only learn responsibility and but you could use the hand

    7)  HOMEWORK BEFORE PLAY TIME: Don’t stay up late because Homework was the last thing to do. Work before play

“ENJOY NOW BECAUSE THIS WON’T LAST FOREVER”!

BLACK AIDS INSTITUTE IS AMAZING. The Women of Journey worked the Red Carpet affair and offered our Volunteer Services to many Heros in the Struggle! The speakers were amazing and \ the special desserts made the night perfect. Sometimes we have to humble ourselves and give back in simple ways. Our Vice-President - Natasha S. White , Angel Dobine , Chelyce Perry and President-Makresha Reneau all took to the isles ,ushered people to their seats, sold raffle tickets, handed out important information to the special guest in attendance and smiled through the process. Now this type of Community Support is what we need to focus on. Gerald -Director over the Gala did a great job, all was organized and fun. Journey supports the BLACK AIDS INSTITUTE !

     Love Your Heart Campaign
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined. For more than 10 years, the American Heart Association has sponsored National Wear Red Day® to raise awareness in the fight against heart disease in women.
Celebrate National Wear Red Day® with Go Red For Women on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 to help fight women’s No. 1 killer—heart disease. Join the movement nationwide and learn how you can honor women like you on this important day in the information below.
    Symptoms of a heart attack:
•Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
•Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
•Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.
•Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
As with men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain or discomfort. But it’s important to note that women are more likely to experience the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
What to do during a heart attack

If you experience any of these signs or symptoms:
•Do not wait to call for help. Dial 9-1-1, make sure to follow the operator’s instructions and get to a hospital right away.
•Do not drive yourself or have someone drive you to the hospital unless you have no other choice.
•Try to stay as calm as possible and take deep, slow breaths while you wait for the emergency responders.
Why it’s important to know the symptoms of a heart attack
Women who consider themselves healthy often misdiagnose the symptoms of a heart attack because they don’t think it could happen to them. That is why it’s crucial to learn about heart disease and stroke, know your numbers, live a heart-healthy lifestyle and be aware of the risk factors of heart disease

    JANUARY 15, 2014 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) -was an American clergyman, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience. King has become a national icon in the history of American progressivism. Towards the end of his life King repeated called out the ills of capitalism as well as racism, materialism, and militarism. Those giants are rarely called out by name anymore even though these manmade institutions are rapidly destroying the planet. A “person-oriented” society is just, egalitarian, and sustainable. A “thing-oriented” society leaves us at war with ourselves, each other and the planet. Which kind of society do you want to live in?

Update Story: JOURNEY MOSAIC INC.'s Women Conference 2013 AMAZING! Women definitely inspired other women to do the AMAZING on weekend of March 16th. Fifty beautiful, confident and remarkable women came together to bond, build relationships and be enlightened! Conference opened up with acknowledgments, and a Sistah video presented by Journey's Media Team. The room was blessed by Little Ms. Milan Reneau praise dance. Incredible speakers such as Ms. Sudonna Moss Logan discussed the "Company we keep". This humble, witty, woman of God touched everyone's hearts and added a new theme to our weekend. "Iron Sharpens Iron". Think about it. Mr. Donta' Morrison enlightened the women on one of Journey's Platform's, HIV and AIDS awareness. He laid it all out from beginning to end. Donta' is relatable, open, as well as an Author, Activist and Speaker, but more importantly our friend.  Sistah, Tasha Stiger instructed a workshop on mental wellness among women. The activities in this workshop really demanded women to put individual life priorities in to perspective. Sistah, Jenifer Lee taught the art of creating gorgeous necklaces and bracelets. Something we all will keep and connect with this weekend. Not to mention, we had wonderful Jewelry, Clothes, Accessories, Soaps, Linen and body Scrubs vendors for a little "shopping girlfriend time". Photography by Lonnie Payne captured it all. Karaoke ended the night with laughs and hugs to wake up to Praise and Worship led by Journey Member Mrs. Kumesha Driver and her lovely husband Mr. Louis Driver. Pacific Palms Resort was nothing but nice, clean and accommodating. Not to forget their delicious Breakfast and Lunch Buffets. Thank you Makresha Reneau, Natasha White, Danielle Holloway and the Conference committee on your hard work and dedication in setting the conference on such a high bar. 10 Torn Layers of Silk (Stage Play) www.10tls.blogspot.com

------------------------------------------------------ September September ! Journey Gas It UP Month.
Journey took the month of July/August to refuel and rethink our strategy . We have come to the conclusion that " Giving Up" is not an option. We talked about life and the setbacks it brings and we have to realize that no matter how many obstacles that stand in our way, we must push forward ' ; it's our only option. If we allow the trials and tribulations to remain constant then they will stop us from getting closer to our goal. Our Goal is not to be the next millionare to rescue our family, it's not to have free flowing cash like the our celebrity sistahs and it's not to brag and boast about how you are the Man who gives us the tools to Labor. We honor you and Rest this day ! Thanks to Our Father for all Aspects of ourBodies to help us work! WE trust that our LABOR is not

we made it, it's to show the Enemy that we too Can Win...
We will WIN in our Personal struggles and don't SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF..... crumbled donuts can never fill a box .. but a whole donut can! ..... BE WHOLE! ...

in Vein....  September is Gynecological Month  It is expected that over 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 15,000 women will lose their lives from the disease this year alone in the United States. Women usually do not talk about gynecological issues, but we need to stop the silence. Ask questions. Get informed. Talk to you doctor. There are 5 major gynecological cancers: cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, and vulvar. Symptoms such as: vaginal bleeding, loss of appetite or constantly feeling full, belly bloating, and constant fatigue. See your doctor regularly!

AUGUST ! Is there a place for me in this society ? That's the question we ask during this 8th month of 2012. So many shifts and changes have happened during this year and it's up to us to make sure we are taking control of our Destiny. If you've taken your Vision Board and locked it away in the closet, I challenge you to pull it out and make sure your Vision is still operating and on Target! If you have lost your momentum and zest for the Hustle ... get on the Grind and implement the ... It Factor! It's up to you to Be Successful .......... fly high and stop sitting and waiting on somebody to promote your DREAM......

    Journey Season of Change
May has arrived and Journey Sistahs are stepping it up and making significant changes. We started the year Getting Fit for Life and Leading towards our destiny. This hasn’t changed! Journey Sistahs are more determined than ever to get their bodies in control; so far our members have lost 100lbs. And we have 400lbs to go. Spiritually, mentally and physically we are whole and our group is more solid than it’s ever been.
If you think Journey is doing too much then you are sleeping too much! WE are pushing towards our destiny and you can’t push lying down. You have to sit up, stand up and get your whole body involved!

Journey wants to show support for the Youth that are in the Foster Care System. Journey wants you to know that you are valued and we have not forgotten to care about You! Journey supports:

    Living Advantage: http://www.livingadvantageinc.org/Our-Challenge.cfm
Youth in foster care are victims of not having an identity because they do not have access to their vital life documents such as social security cards, birth certificates and picture identification. There are many instances when teenagers are unaware of their own birth dates. This often happens when a child is continuously moved from home to home and information is not transferred or is lost. The challenge of not having access to their important identification causes low educational outcomes, unemployment, homelessness and incarceration.
In Los Angeles County there are over 40,000 youth in foster care the highest population in the country and approximately 1500 age-out of the system annually without support. The Alliance for Children’s Rights law firm in Los Angeles states, “there are no reliable statistics or estimates of the number or proportion of youth in foster care who don’t have birth certificates or social security numbers, this is a national phenomenon.”

Overall, California’s data indicates that outcomes for youth aging out of foster care are poor. Specifically, the data reflects deficiencies in education, employment and housing, all of which are key indicators for self-sufficiency. According to the California Department of Social Services – Child Welfare Data Analysis Bureau:

High School Education or Equivalency: Less than half (49.5%) of foster youth leave care with a high school diploma or equivalency. Only 40% of youth actually have a diploma – the remaining 9.5% have high school equivalency or proficiency certificates.

Employment: Only 29% of youth report having obtained either part-time or full-time employment. Of those youth, nearly 80% are employed part-time. Almost 10% of youth have no means of financial support at all.

Housing: More than 84% of youth report having plans for housing at the time of emancipation. Anecdotal reports indicate that many plans are only temporary. Only 15% of youth live in some kind of supportive transitional housing, including the Transitional Housing Program.

Incarceration: 40% of former foster youth are a cost to the community. The cost to the community occurs within 2-4 years of emancipation because 40% of emancipated youth have been on public assistance or incarcerated by that time. The State must bear the following significant economic and other costs of youth who end up incarcerated: Criminal justice costs (i.e., operation of criminal justice system in terms of police, prosecution, courts, probation, incarceration, parole etc.) Property damage, Loss of productivity to society, Loss of work time by victims, their families and the offender, Loss of property values in areas of high crime, Pain and suffering of crime victims and society.

As a result, youth in foster care are more at risk of dropping out of school, becoming unemployable, homeless which leads to incarceration. JOURNEY SUPPORTS RESOURCES THAT HELP STOP THIS PROBLEM. NOW.

Women make the world go round:

    classy.....Phenomenal!

    Phenomenal Woman

    -Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
    They think I'm telling lies.
    I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
    The span of my hips,
    The stride of my step,
    The curl of my lips.
    I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
    And to a man,
    The fellows stand or
    Fall down on their knees.
    Then they swarm around me,
    A hive of honey bees.
    I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
    The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
    I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    But they can't touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
    I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I'm a woman

    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
    When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
    I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
    The bend of my hair,
    the palm of my hand,
    The need of my care,
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Journey Celebrates Black History Month
And Salutes Women who Changed America
The women of Journey are proud to be recognized as a group of women that are making Strides in the Community and beyond. However, without the fight and plight of women of Color before us, we could never be as Phenomenal as we are today. America Celebrates Black History Month but we Celebrate the History of a People that stood for more than just a Color but a Cause…

Today Journey Celebrates women like: Our Mothers who gave birth to strong women that fight for equality daily, Ella Jo Baker, Mary Mcleod Bethune, Shirley Chisholm, Septima Poinsette Clark, Kathleen Cleaver, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Fannie Lou Hamer, Frances Watkins Harper, Dorothy Irene Height, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Barbara Charline Jordan, Coretta Scott King, The Strong Black Women of Journey and women throughout the United States and beyond that Represent Equality and Justice for all Women. History is Black everyday just as long as you embrace the HUE of YOU.

    PRESIDENT'S DAY SALUTE!

HAPPY PRESIDENT'S DAY TO NOT ONLY OUR NATION'S GOVERNED ELECTED OFFICIAL, PRES. BARACK OBAMA BUT ALSO TO A PHENOMENAL WOMAN/CEO/FOUNDER OF JOURNEY MOSAIC, INC, MRS. MAKRESHA M. RENEAU!

YOU EXCEED AND EXCEL BEYOND ALL OF JOURNEY'S NEEDS IN ASSISTING TO MAKE THIS A BETTER PLACE FOR US ALL.
THANK YOU FOR THE FOUNDATION. ITS YOUR DAY TOO, NOW SMILE.

Journey learned the importance of Branding.

    Who is your Brand?
How Should your Brand be presented to others?

Does your Brand speak to the principles of branding?
Journey is Thankful to the Speakers & Business Owners :
Myiesha McCarthy and Porshe Taylor. They helped the women
of Journey put it  all in perspective with detailed

We were fortunate that the Leadership Team took the steps to
providing information that could take the women of Journey to the next level and Journey now know's that,
" Your Brand is Money!" So don't be afraid to charge a:

Journey is Excited about all the Wonderful Opportunities of 2012.
Our goal this year is to “Focus with Humility” .
Humbly Journey is preparing for a Year of Greatness, the Organization is constantly evolving and embracing new and exciting challenges. In 2011 we touched the surface of Community Involvement but in 2012 we are diving in head first so we can impact and change Lives.

Journey Weight Loss Challenge: We are committed to Fitness
Journey has made the decision to ‘’Work that Body in 2012:
From January – December our Members and friends are committed
To losing 300lbs. Yes. We can do it and we are excited about where we are going.
We’ve worked with several Fitness Professionals to come up with a Challenge that
Get Journey moving. Be on the Lookout for Testimonials and Photos!
Our new journey involves a healthier diet that includes more fresh fruits and veggies, and cuts way back on fried foods and high fructose corn syrup. It involves drinking water instead of just about anything else – that doesn’t mean that we won’t allow ourselves the indulgences that make our mouth happy, but we are doing a better job of keeping liquid calories in check. It involves improving our skincare regimen – including discovering new body washes, sunscreens, night creams and lotions that allow us to treat our skin like the vital organ of our bodies that it is (expect some awesome reviews of some of these products coming up!). It involves being completely truthful with self. And it involves testing our own limits of strength, speed, stamina and sweat than accustomed to doing before. Our new journey does NOT involve constantly counting and comparing and being critical of self and our own efforts and abilities. Not anymore.
